New to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Everything You Need To Get Started

If you’re curious about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu but aren’t quite sure what to expect, you’re in the right place. Learn what Jiu-Jitsu is, why people train, what your first class is like, and how to take your first step at Beda.

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, often called BJJ or simply Jiu-Jitsu, is a martial art built around grappling, control, and technique. Rather than relying primarily on strikes, students learn how to use positioning, leverage, movement, and submissions to control an opponent.

Training combines technical instruction with hands-on practice. You’ll learn positions and techniques, practice them with a partner, and gradually learn how to apply those skills against resistance.

One of the things that makes Jiu-Jitsu unique is that there is always more to learn. Progress comes from developing technique, solving problems, and gaining experience on the mat over time.

Why Train Jiu-Jitsu?

People walk through our doors for all kinds of reasons. Some want to learn how to defend themselves. Others are looking for a new way to exercise, compete, build confidence, or simply find something they enjoy doing. Whatever brings you to the mat, Jiu-Jitsu offers plenty of reasons to stay.

Fitness

Jiu-Jitsu is a full-body activity that develops strength, endurance, coordination, balance, and mobility. Because you’re learning and applying techniques while you train, the workout is rarely the only thing you’re thinking about.

Confidence

Learning new skills and seeing yourself improve builds confidence over time. Jiu-Jitsu challenges you to work through difficult situations, solve problems, and become comfortable doing things that once felt unfamiliar.

Self-Defense

Jiu-Jitsu teaches practical skills for controlling distance, escaping difficult positions, maintaining control, and responding under pressure. Students develop technique alongside greater body awareness and confidence.

Community

Training is something you do with other people. Students learn together, challenge one another, and help each other improve. Over time, the people you share the mats with become an important part of the experience.

Whatever brings you to Jiu-Jitsu, there’s a place to start.
